Discover The Magic Of Murgon Shire
Discover The Magic Of The South Burnett Where is Murgon Shire?
Murgon Shire is located at the northern end of the South Burnett region of south-east Queensland, Australia.

The South Burnett is home to two of Queensland's biggest inland waterways (the Bjelke-Petersen Dam and Lake Boondooma) and is also one of the largest wine-growing regions in the State. Most of the South Burnett is located just a few easy, pleasant driving hours from Brisbane (and even less from the Sunshine Coast or Wide Bay).

In 1987 the Queensland State Government began construction of the Bjelke-Petersen Dam near the town (the 18th largest dam in the State) and it was opened to the public in March 1989. Today the Yallakool Tourist Park which Murgon Shire Council built and continues to operate on the shores of Lake Barambah draws literally tens of thousands of visitors each year.

In the early 1990s Murgon also became the founding home of Queensland's newest wine region when many large vineyards began to be established in the Shire. Today this industry's beautiful cellar doors and wineries attract their own dedicated following too.

Why Visit Murgon Shire?
Tasting the vintage at Dusty Hill If you're tired of the the monotonous sameness of coastal tourist resorts you'll find that Murgon Shire is a genuine breath of fresh air. We 're different - completely different - to the nearby Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay areas. And many people find they like us better because of that.

Some people first come to visit us to attend one of our Shire's major annual festivals: the Shakin Grape Wine Festival (held in and around Murgon every October); the wholesome family fun of the Murgon Show (held each March); or the Monster Easter Markets (held at Yallakool every Easter long weekend). Each of these events draw many thousands of people every year.

But other people come to see us all year round:
  • Southerners particularly enjoy visiting us in the cooler months (March to November) when our mild climate and near-endless sunny days provide a welcome relief from the cold, wet winters of Australia's southern states.

  • Watersports and fishing enthusiasts come to visit us to enjoy the great inland fishing, swimming and boating facilities on Lake Barambah and the relaxed camping on offer at Council's Yallakool Tourist Park (which provides everything from powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites through to modern on-site villa accommodation)

  • Wine enthusiasts travel around our Shire to sample and enjoy the many beautiful cellar doors that line the Barambah Wine Trail (which wraps around Lake Barambah - many cellar doors actually overlook the lake)

  • Hikers, rock-climbers, horse riders and bird-watchers come to see us all year round because our forests and reserves abound with wonderful walking and riding trails and abundant birdlife.

  • And other Queenslanders come to see us at any time of year - partly because we're a perfect weekend getaway destination from Brisbane and most other parts of South East Queensland; and partly because we're so completely different that we really are a complete holiday from everyday life and the workaday world!
